CHAPTER THIRTY-FIVE
R eg wandered through the cemetery. Every whisper of the wind in the trees or the sound of an animal nearby made her jumpy.
A figure stood in the distance, just a silhouette in the dying light. Reg stretched out her senses, every fiber of her body alert and testing for danger. She could still run back to her car. She could make it before the man could reach her.
He lifted a hand in greeting. Not something that a stalker or serial killer was likely to do. At least, Reg hoped not. Her psychic senses told her it was October. But would she know if he had evil intentions toward her? She had not sensed any malevolence from Jake, and yet, from what she had seen of him through the wolvesâ eyes, he was not the man she had thought him.
Still, that didnât stop her from walking up to October. His expression was serious.
âThanks for coming. This way.â
He touched her on the arm and led the way through the trees. The cemetery was larger than she had thought it. She saw that it extended beyond the trees she had supposed marked the back of the graveyard. And there were more graves, larger monuments, and some low, square buildings. October steered her toward one of them.
âWait.â Reg resisted.
He stopped and looked questioning.
âWeâre not meeting in there,â Reg said firmly.
He raised his brows. âItâs perfectly safe.â
âItâs a crypt.â
âItâs empty. Thereâs nothing to worry about.â
âEmpty?â
âWhatever remains were originally stored there, they are long gone now. You are not desecrating sacred ground.â His tone was slightly ironic, as if he didnât believe in such things.
âYouâre sure there are no bones in there.â
âIâm sure. Come now. We donât have a lot of time.â
Reg didnât like being rushed. She looked around the cemetery. Not everyone there was at rest. Anxiety was crawling up her back and constricting her breathing. She dreaded what was to come. October cocked his head slightly, looking at Reg.
âAre you okay?â
Reg was sweating, and it wasnât because of the heat. Sweat dripped from her temples and down her back, making her shiver.
âCemeteries are not my favorite places. I wish youâd told me where you were meeting over the phone. Or picked somewhere else.â
âItâs fine.â He laughed. âI wouldnât think that a medium would have an issue with being in a cemetery.â
âWhy not?â
âYou can talk to the ghosts, canât you? So whatâs there for you to be scared of? The unknown is open to you.â
âHave you ever walked into a room where everyone wants to talk to you at the same time?â
âWellâ¦â
Reg looked anxiously at the mausoleum. She supposed it wouldnât be any worse than standing outside, where she could see, hear, and feel so many spirits there who wanted to make contact through her.
âLetâs go in, already,â she grumbled.
October led her on, opening the big door of the building for her.
It was more open than she would have expected. She had imagined there would be a series of smaller rooms inside the building, each a separate crypt for a different family or family member.
